Each year, the ACPL holds an event called Constitution Day to celebrate the signing of the US Constitution. On September 17, we welcomed former Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice R. Fred Lewis to speak on the topic of “What Are The American Dreams For Your Generation?” Through this discussion, he opened up about his journey from growing up in a lower socio-economic household to eventually attending law school and finding success in his law career.
As Justice Lewis was sharing about his background, he said that he learned the importance of hard work and determination. By following the plans that the Lord had in store for him, he decided to pursue a career in law. He found that this career would allow him the chance to make a difference in the community. What the American dream means to him is that despite going through difficult times in his personal life, he was still given a loving and faithful wife and excelled in his career. During his discussion, students and other members of the community had the opportunity to ask him questions about the moral dilemmas he faced during his time as Chief Justice. He responded with transparency, saying that his position required him to follow the law even if it was one he disagreed with. The overall message he communicated to students was the importance of perseverance and determination.
